Designed by Australian Alan Payne, Advance was the challenger of record for the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron. Reportedly described by her own designer as, "the ugliest Twelve I've ever seen", Advance, was a radical departure that was meant to perform well in the light air and sloppy seas supposedly prevelant in newport in August and September. Unfortunately, she didn't and was eliminated.
