Australia 2 Australia II arrived in Newport in the summer of 1983 with its secret keel hidden under a shroud and soon developed a fearsome reputation as the challenger capable of taking the Cup. The New York Yacht Club, frightened by the prospect of losing, tried to have Australia II disqualified from competing, claiming the breakthrough design of the boat with its winged keel was illegal. In
the end it was decided on the race course. Australia II came from behind
in the seventh and final race to beat Liberty by 41 seconds in the most
exciting yacht racing series ever seen.
